This weekend I went out with some friends to Bootie LA, billed as “the biggest bootleg mashup party in the world.” I had no idea what to expect, and it’s a good thing I didn’t have any expectations going into it, because I don’t think I could have foreseen gold American Apparel body suits, Miley Cyrus and Notorious BIG mashups and red velvet cupcakes all under one roof.
As the night dragged on, my hair style went from straight down to back in a ponytail to up in a tousled side ponytail. Once I finally got home, too tired to brush my hair, I tied it into a knotted bun then went to bed. Big. Mistake. My head was the perfect storm of teased hair and glitter. Generally, my response is to run a brush or comb briefly through my hair with little regard for the knots and kinks. But then I remembered one of the pages I had worked on earlier in the week about how to detangle hair. Problem solved.

Because I was a cheerleader in high school and a sorority girl in college, knowing how to do my hair has always been an essential skill, though one I’m not sure I was ever taught. Over the years, I guess I just picked most of it up by osmosis—watching other girls do their hair, reading magazines, learning from my prom hair stylists. I thought I knew a fair amount about doing my own hair. Then this week at work, I started writing pages based on the videos like the ones above created from a partnership with a local salon, Studio DNA, and I’ve been picking up some great tips that I feel ought to be shared. So as a corollary to the “How to Detangle Your Hair” video, here’s Mahalo’s video on how to tease hair without having it look like a rat’s nest at the end.
