Design Time: Rustic Retreat

Recently, I was at the house of some friends who host couples’ retreats and marriage counseling in their home in the woods near Big Bear. It was so warm and inviting–it was home. It also didn’t hurt that she had freshly baked peach cobbler waiting for us. But their home got me out of my city-girl mentality and decorating my imaginary future mountaintop escape. And even if I never actually have one, I’d like to think I’d incorporate the spirit of these designs into my next apartment or home.

Cozy living room

One of the best things about the living room of a cabin is that an abundance of throw blankets and pillows it totally justified by the weather. And they don’t even have to match!

Rustic bedroom setup

This bedroom setup is just so perfect for those rainy days I would inevitably spend in bed working on my laptop. Tough life, right?

Nouveau-vintage bathroom

I love the combination of the clean, modern walls and sink with the worn, wooden table and accents.

DIY backyard end table

Upend half a wine barrel from your local hardware store to use as a side table. (And pick up some potted flowers while you’re there.)

Glowing candles in lanterns

I will gladly seize any chance I have to incorporate candles into my home decor.
