Nothing gets me quite as excited as the perfect grilled cheese—just ask my former roommate, who once stole one from a photoshoot for me because he knew how much I loved them. And while I’m a grilled cheese purist (extra sharp cheddar on cracked wheat sourdough bread), I felt Mahalo’s video on “How to Make the Perfect Grilled Cheese” was about as exciting as a Wonder Bread-Kraft Singles combo.
In my opinion, either the name or the content of the video should be changed. If I were to rename this video, I’d call it, “How to Make a Basic Grilled Cheese.” It’s not a bad video, but if I were to search YouTube for step-by-step guide to the perfect grilled cheese, I’d be expecting something a little more tantalizing than this.
On the other hand, I think the better route would be to change the content of the video. Instead of Ms. Jones suggesting the oh-so-bland-and-boring white bread and cheddar cheese recipe, I would love to see her offer suggestions on bread-and-cheese pairings. Perhaps we’d like to try a Gruyère and Parmesan blend on French bread or jalepeno jack on ciabatta bread. The combinations are limitless, but since I’m no culinary expert, I’d love to hear from a seasoned food blogger about some of her favorite combinations.
From there, the video could continue as it does now, with guided directions for how to grill the sandwich to perfection. Because “perfect” is such a subjective word, the goal of this video really should be to help as many different palettes as possible find grilled cheese nirvana.
