While flipping through May issue of Glamour magazine, I came across an article about “The Dos and Don’ts of Date Night,” with advice from Michael Kors. First of all, if Mr. Kors told me burlap sacks were the hot new trend for summer, I’d go out and buy three, so needless to say, for me, what he says goes when it comes to fashion.
But the article got me thinking about the similarities between what you wear on a first date and what you wear to a job interview. Essentially, the goal of both is the same—get your date or interviewer to like you enough to want to see more of you. Much of that first impression depends on what you wear and how you present yourself.

Granted, most of us know that you should wear clean, professional-looking clothes to an interview but what often gets lost are the details. What is that one thing that will set you apart from every other applicant in a sea of grey and black suits?
According to Mr. Kors, the keys to a great date night outfit are bold colors and a little glitz. And according Mahalo’s style expert Sarah Parlow, the same can be said of a great interview outfit. Of course, it’s important not to overdo it—a simple but beautiful gold necklace or statement tie is often enough to draw just the right amount of attention from your interviewer (and possibly a comment). These small touches say, “I can put together an overall polished look without losing site of the details or my personality.”
Mahalo’s style expert Sarah Parlow offers some basic advice for how to dress for a job interview.
The interview, much like the first date, is a game of seduction. Obviously, you’re not literally trying to get into bed with your interviewer, but you do want to put your best face forward so that after the interview is over, he finds that he just can’t stop thinking about you and wonders if it’s too soon to call for a second date, er, interview.
