Wedding Without a Marriage

Apparently, I’m on the wedding beat at work. Last week was all about getting fit for your wedding. This week, I focused on doing your makeup for your wedding, which got me thinking about how much I want to have a wedding. Not necessarily get married, mind you, just have a wedding.

I’m not the first to propose a wedding sans groom. Last November, a Taiwanese woman married herself. Granted, her motives were much more noble than mine–she was protesting governmental pressures on women to get married. I, on the other hand, simply want to throw a party for my friends and family, wear an obscenely expensive white dress and be the center of attention for a few hours.

The thought of getting married, however, gives me a slight panic attack, mostly due to the fact that I’m of the belief that marriage is something I’m only going to do once in my life. According to the most recent US Census data, there’s only a 64-percent chance that a marriage will survive 10 years, and a 50-percent chance a marriage will last 20 years. I don’t want my marriage to have a coin flip’s chance at surviving. I want it to be like my grandparents who were married more than 50 years and were not only madly in love with each other but best friends as well.

Age seems to play a large role in predicting a marriage’s chances of survival. Couples who were married after 26 were much more likely to be married 10 years later than those who were married younger. Since I just turned 23, I’ll put off worrying about turning into an old maid for a few more years. Not that getting married young is necessarily a detriment to a marriage. My mom was married when she was 19 and my dad was 23, and they’ve been married 34 years.

So although I do want to get married one day, I’m in no rush to get the altar. For now, I’m content simply to write about weddings and tear out magazine pages of ones that inspire me (What can I say? I’m a girl.)
